Residue tests

As SAPPO regards the production of high a quality, save product for the consumer a priority, the organisation three years ago started to finance the monitoring of the residue levels in the pork produced by its members. The aim of the residue tests is to establish if local producers adhere to the withdrawal periods stipulated by pharmaceutical companies on antibiotics administered to pigs. Onderstepoort conducts the tests on representative samples collected from producers.

No tests were done during 2005 but in 2006/2007 imported pork will be tested for the residues of antibiotics. The Department of Agriculture will collect samples at ports and Onderstepoort will conduct the tests.

The latest findings by Onderstepoort proved that South African pig farmers adhere to the stipulations.

The results of the 2004 residue survey are the most satisfactory to date. The antimicrobials tested for were all those included in the chemically related groups of the:

  • Beta-lactams
  • Amino-glycocides
  • Macrolides
  • Quinolones
  • Sulfonamides
  • Tetracyclines

A total of 412 pigs were tested. The only positive samples were sulfonamides and confined to two properties. No other antimicrobials at unacceptable levels were detected. This is an excellent result.
