MH gene tests

SAPPO holds the license to the testing of the MH gene in South African breeding pig herds. Pigs with this gene are highly stress susceptible, can die easily in transit and are prone to develop pale, soft and exudative (PSE) pork when slaughtered.

The test was patented by the University of Toronto Innovation Fund in Canada and the South African pork industry had to buy the license from this university. A royalty per test also has to be paid to the Innovation Fund.

The cost for testing one sample by the ARC Livestock Business Division is R150.

Pig breeders sent in samples from pigs which they wanted to be certified free of the MH gene (homozygous NN) or of pigs which they suspected of having the MH gene, either as a carrier (heterozygous Nn) or as a MH positive (homozygous nn) pig.
