The association also aims to keep pork producers in the Western Cape abreast of what is happening in the industry. The Western Cape Pork Producers Association strives to promote the orderly marketing of pigs in the province. It also aims to promote mutual understanding between producers, consumers, processors and marketers of pigs and pork products. The association is not profit driven. Membership is open to all commercial and emerging producers. The activities of the association are controlled by a board which is appointed at the association's annual general meeting. This usually takes place in September or October each year. The annual general meeting is the association's highest authority. Hennie Cronjé (photo) is currently the chairman. During the past year the association's board attended to various matters such as imports, pig health and research. It represents the Western Cape's pig farmers on various committees such as the Red Meat Producers' association, Agri Expo West Cape, the Stud Breeders' Committee and the Maitland Advisory Committee, Maitland Abattoir Functions and the Stock Theft Committee. The association regularly presents farmers' days to inform pig producers of current matters. It has its own newsletter, The Cape Baconer, which appears regularly. Promotions play an important role in the Western Cape and the Cape Province Pork Producers' Organisation is actively involved in promoting pork. The promotions campaign mainly consists of in-store demonstrations and newspaper advertising.
