The Free State Pork Producers' Organisation

The Free State Pork Producers’ Association is the mouthpiece of pork farmers in the Free State. Its members represent 800 sows.

The association aims to promote and protect the interests of pork producers in the province. This includes the orderly production and marketing of pigs. The association also liaise with the government and other bodies in the province on behalf of pig producers.

The association also aims to

  • do its own in-store promotions, complementary to the national promotions of SAPPO. The local promotions are done on a partnership basis with producers and butcheries.
  • be involved with training at the Free State Technikon's Hotel School and sponsors an annual pork recipe competition.
  • compile a recipe book which is being distributed to guest houses and hotel schools.
  • communicate with its members by means of a newsletter.
  • be involved with the Northern Free State Pig Study Group.

The activities of the association are controlled by its management which is appointed at the association's annual general meeting. This usually takes place in April/May each year. The annual general meeting is the association's highest authority.

The current chairman of the association is Dr Edgar Payne (photo top right).

Promotions are an important part of the association's workings. Click top right to read more about the province's promotions of the past year.
