The Pig Breeders Society
The Pig Breeders' Society of South Africa
(PBS) was formed on 20 September 1919 and has been affiliated since its
inception to the South African Studbook and Livestock Improvement
Association.
The objectives of the PBS are:
- to bring about improvement in the
general standard of all recognised pig breeds in South Africa;
- to keep registration and performance
records of the pedigrees and purebred boars and sows duly registered
through the PBS;
- to enhance the functional production and
economic merit of stud animals through active participation in the
National Pig Performance and Progeny Testing Scheme (NPPTS) of the
Agricultural Research Council's Animal Improvement Institute (ARCAII).
The advantages of belonging to the Society
are the following:
- All recordings such as births,
deaths and transfers are done through the Society
- The PBS Council, secretariat and its
constitution ensure that this organisation serves the interests of the
industry at large.
- The PBS has a wealth of
experience and knowledge and has a strong supportive basis through
inter alia SA Studbook, the ARC and Independent Selection Panel,
- Management Committee for Pig Performance
Testing, PigBLUP and PigGen.
- Structured breeding policies are
formulated for each breeder. Breeders are encouraged to do central
testing and on farm testing and are shown how to make good use of BLUP
values.
- Breeders are encouraged to keep up to
date with the latest technology available.
